Improving nocturnal event monitoring in people with intellectual disability in community using an artificial intelligence camera
We are excited to report the results of an independent study conducted in Cornwall, UK, where Nelli registrations have been successfully used with patients with intellectual disabilities. The use of Nelli in this context has proven highly effective in supporting care for this vulnerable population.
Gold standard diagnosis of epilepsy includes a suitable EEG. However some patients do not tolerate EEG because of the wires and electrodes that need to be attached to the patient. These often include patients with intellectual disability, who are also more likely to experience severe seizure related harm.
In this study Dr Charlotte Young, Dr David Cox and Dr Rohit Shankar aimed to evaluate the acceptability of Nelli being placed in the rooms of patients with intellectual disability. Nelli was well accepted by 14 out of 15 patients and remained in place for a minimum of 14 nights. In addition to being well-received by the patients, Nelli captured 707 possible seizure events of which 247 were missed by carers. The results show that Nelli allowed for improved care planning for this difficult to investigate population. Also carers reported that our Nelli system brought them peace of mind.
